We went for an art walk on the streets of La Cruz to photograph the fantastic murals which have just been painted as part of the Cuidad Murals project.

May 15, 2019-Work of Art

We have a faucet at our galley sink (one of three) for salt water which we use for washing when we are out cruising.

It broke.

I took it out and tried to fix it, but decided it was not repairable.

But we still needed to have some way to run salt water in the sink; it’s an important way to conserve fresh water while away from the dock.

After rummaging around in the plumbing parts bin I was able cobble together this work of art.

Then I ordered a new faucet which arrived in La Cruz a few days later, and we picked it up when we went down there for a couple of nights. That was a week ago. We’re still using the temporary one.

October 14, 2018-Bright Bags

I call it "Bag Art". Oh, it's not all that much art, just something which I think is kind'a fun; making an attractive and colorful sail bag. You see, I got a couple of spinnaker bags from China, one more than I needed. (I guess ordering in Cantonese is not my strong point). Both were black. Boring. What is worse is that I knew it would cause my forw'd hands some confusion: "Go get the A3". If there are five to choose from, maybe you get the right one, maybe not. But if I gave the bags some distinctive colors and distinctive markings, well then it would be easier: "Get the A3, (black bag)" or "Get the black and yellow bag with the A2 in it".

So I bought some yellow sunbrella scraps from Mike and my white insignia cloth and we got out the sewing machine, and off we went, making new bags.

On top of that, we took some time to re-measure the spinnakers, just in case we needed to prove that they were legal size, and we put the sails into the bags with a nice fold, to make them pack smaller.

All in all it was a nice project for a couple of days.

October 21, 2016-Mike Danielson's Fish Prints

Mike Danielson, owner of PV Sailing and North Sails rep, is an artist as well as a sailmaker and a great sailor. He is well known among the deep sea fishing set for his fantastic art prints of large game fish.

I caught up with Mike recently at the annual La Cruz Sports Fishing Tournament where he was preparing to make prints of some of the largest game fish including one of the tourney winning Black Marlins. This giant fish, at 198 kilograms, was a beautiful specimen, and the fishermen who brought it in were justifiably proud. By creating an exact art image of the fish it's power and beauty can be retained for years to come.

Oct. 22, 2010-Sega Dancing in Mauritius

The culture in Mauritius is a mix of French, Indian, and African/Creole. One Creole contribution is this unique sega dancing which was a form of relaxation of the African workers after a hard day working in the sugar fields. Now it is an erotic dance enjoyed for the fun of it and particularly enjoyed by tourists.

The ARC Around the World Rally organized this performance at La Caudan Marina as entertainment during their departure party in Port Louis.

July 4, 2010-Time to Hang Some Art

Our walls have been bare for several months and we've been meaning to hang some new art to replace the photos and paintings we had up for a long time and which came down when we repainted the cabin last year.

Finally we found the impetus we needed when we started to pack provisions aboard for the trip to Africa; all those old framed works took up valuable space in one of our lockers.

We could clear out the locker if we re-hung the art.

But we wanted new art.

So we printed off a few photos we liked and sent them out to be matted just the size to fit our existing frames and they will all be hanging in a few days.

This was an art project for us. We shot some images of Buddha's in Ayutthaya and worked them over in Photoshop, and came up with pieces like this.
